Wine: Bridging the Workplace Diversity Gap
No, it’s not what you’re thinking—drinking lots of wine really doesn’t promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace (except maybe in the very short term). But the lessons we can learn from wine can lead to better understanding of cultural, generational and personality differences in organizational teams.
Think about the parallel stereotypes . . . Are all white wines the same? Are reds always better than whites? Are old wines generally tastier than young ones? Is it fair to always serve your favorite “go-to” wine with every meal?
In the world of wine, these assumptions can prevent you from experiencing some great flavors and discoveries. And, even more damaging, in the world of work, they can lead to division, favoritism and close-mindedness.
With education and respectful discussion, we can bridge these gaps—bringing out the best in our taste buds and our teams. Salut!
Put It into Practice:
Think about one of the limiting beliefs you have about wine (and if you’re thinking, “I hate all wine,” that would be a great example). Consider the data that has brought you to that conclusion, and make a sincere effort to see if you can find evidence to the contrary. Opening your mind to other possibilities paves the way to greater understanding, more thoughtful choices and a better world for us all.
Perform at Your Peak:
Capitalize on the diversity of your team by signing on for our signature seminar, The Grape Divide . Through a unique and entertaining wine tasting program, participants will learn how to go beyond appearances and stereotypes to create a work environment that fosters respect, inclusion and collaboration.
Ovations Inc. takes corporate teams out of the office to experience activities such as cooking, yoga, golf, scavenger hunts and more. Teams focus on various areas of peak performance and apply the learnings back to the work environment. Contact us to find out how can help take your team to the top.
