A Year of Thanks

For many, the past year has been one of struggle and misfortune—but there also are some great success stories in the midst of the doom and gloom. Even if you’ve had a particularly challenging year, I’m sure you can identify some fond memories and moments of joy.

Before the close of 2009, take time to write a list of 100 things you’re thankful for. Make it a running list—one you can add to as the spirit moves you. Just make sure that by December 31 you have reached 100. Challenging yourself to complete the long list will help you discover reservoirs of gratitude you may not have realized or recognized.

As the year comes to a close, I am thankful for the opportunity to travel to Italy during the month of December (and as a result will be taking a month off from writing this newsletter). I’m also eternally thankful for my friends, family and clients who have made it another year of wonderful blessings for me. May 2010 bring us all many more things to add to our lists!

With gratitude,

Finding Answers to Your Most Burning Questions

I remember hearing recently (although I don’t remember where) that most of us are looking for answers when what we really need is guidance. We often subconsciously expect others to tell us what to do, where to go and even who to be.

This past weekend, CBS’s Mo Rocca reported on The Future of Noise. One of the experts he interviewed observed, “We look at ourselves in the mirror endlessly, but we never listen to ourselves. We’ve become a culture that’s rather deaf.”

It’s no wonder, then, that we look everywhere but inward for the answers to our most burning questions. The noise we experience not only comes in the form of music, jackhammers and jet engines, but also in the form of the onslaught of information available at our fingertips (on TV, Twitter, Facebook blogs and, yes, this newsletter).

When we shift our mindset from looking for answers to looking for guidance, these media become a more effective tool—up to a point. But all too often, we put off important decisions so we can gather more and more information to make sure we’re doing the “right” thing. But the real path to truth, effective leadership and innovation requires eventually turning off the noise and tuning in to your own voice. We are the ones who ultimately have the answers we seek.

Put It into Practice:

Take a moment or two (or more) every day to sit in silence. Even if there is noise around you, consciously acknowledge it, then tune it out. Focus on your breath, or focus on an issue that’s been troubling you or that requires a decision to be made. Silence and stillness provide the ultimate guidance—and also may lead you more authentically to the answers you’ve been seeking.
